The government's decision of 29 July 2026 allowed four recovered appeals relating to sites at and around the Truman Brewery in Tower Hamlets. This account is based on the decision letter and inspector's report.

Scope of the permissions

The appeals covered a data centre, a wider mixed-use redevelopment, a commercial building and works requiring listed-building consent. Planning permission and listed-building consent were granted subject to conditions.

The decision records 44 proposed homes, including six low-cost rented homes and five intermediate units. It also considers employment space, heritage and community benefits.

A contested planning balance

The report records objections about housing provision, heritage and the effects on the local community. Those objections form part of the case considered; they are not findings that every predicted harm will occur.

The Secretary of State concluded that permission should be granted after weighing the relevant considerations. Approval does not mean construction is complete, nor remove the need to comply with conditions and obligations. This is a report of the July decision, not confirmation of the site's present operational status.
