Enfield Council announced on 28 May 2026 that it was withdrawing from the government's new-town process following a change in political leadership.

What the council announced

Council leader Alessandro Georgiou wrote to housing and planning minister Matthew Pennycook confirming that the authority would no longer support proposals linked to the programme, including development at Crews Hill, Vicarage Farm and parts of the borough's Green Belt.

The council said its approach would instead emphasise brownfield sites and town-centre regeneration while continuing to work with government on homes and employment.

What the announcement establishes

The statement records the council's position at that date. It should not be read as proof that every related government proposal or individual planning application was legally cancelled.

For property owners and development teams, the distinction matters: a political change of approach and a formal decision on a particular site are different matters. This article preserves the May announcement as an archive report; anyone assessing a live project should check the current planning record and subsequent official decisions.
