A person worried about losing their home should seek help before the anticipated leaving date. Waiting until every informal possibility has failed can make an already difficult situation harder to manage. The council needs accurate information about the housing position and the people affected so it can assess the appropriate assistance.
Make contact early
GOV.UK explains that councils in England must help eligible people who are legally homeless or likely to become homeless within the next eight weeks. The form of help depends on the circumstances. Do not assume that a notice automatically guarantees a council home or that having somewhere to sleep temporarily removes every housing concern.
Explain the current position
Describe where you are living, who lives with you and why the accommodation may no longer be available. Provide notices and relevant messages if there are any. Distinguish an informal request to move from a formal document and explain any immediate risk.
Gather useful records
Keep the tenancy agreement, rent information, identification and other documents requested by the council. Ask what is needed if something is unavailable rather than abandoning the enquiry. Store copies securely and record what has been supplied.
Track the conversation
Keep the date, contact team and any case reference. Ask what the next step is, what further information is required and when to follow up. Tell the council promptly if circumstances change, including a new notice or the loss of temporary accommodation.
Seek independent advice
A housing adviser can help explain tenancy rights, council decisions and options where the situation is disputed. Do not assume that leaving immediately, stopping rent or signing a surrender is the best step without understanding the consequences. Urgent safety concerns need the appropriate emergency response.
This editorial guide concerns preparing a housing-help enquiry in England. It does not determine eligibility, priority need or the council’s duties in an individual case. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separate homelessness systems. Reviewed 30 October 2026.
