A tenant may deal with a managing agent every day while still needing to know who the landlord is. The management contact and the legal landlord’s identity are related but separate pieces of information. Start by checking the agreement and existing notices, then make a clear written request if the position remains uncertain.

Gather the documents

Look for the landlord details in the tenancy paperwork, correspondence and any notification of a change. Check whether the named person or company is described as owner, landlord or agent. A payment reference or a maintenance contractor’s name is not enough to identify every role.

Use the official route

GOV.UK’s tenant-rights guidance explains that tenants have a right to know their landlord and can write to the person or company receiving rent if the information is missing. Read the current instructions for the applicable arrangement. Keep a dated copy of the request and a reliable record of how it was sent.

Make the question specific

Identify the property and ask for the landlord information, rather than sending a general complaint that leaves the request unclear. If the reply names a company, check that its full legal name is provided. Ask about an inconsistency without making an unsupported accusation about ownership.

Keep practical contacts working

Continue to use the agreed repair and urgent-contact routes while the identity question is resolved. Ask who is handling an outstanding issue if management changes. A request for landlord details should not mean a leak or safety report loses its assigned contact.

Check changed instructions

If new details include a different account for rent, verify the payment instruction through an established route before transferring money. Retain the formal notice and any confirmation. Do not rely solely on an unexpected message claiming that ownership has changed.

This editorial guide concerns organising a request and record in England. It does not decide what address must be supplied under every provision or whether a particular reply satisfies the law. Seek independent housing advice if information is withheld or a deadline is disputed. Reviewed 30 October 2026.
