Updated 2 November 2026. The archived report described an extension of selective licensing in Southwark. The council’s present guidance remains the place to check which designation applies to an individual property and where to find the supporting notices.
Southwark’s selective licensing page lists several ward groups, including Champion Hill and Newington; Faraday, Goose Green and St Giles; and further groups covering areas such as Peckham, Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks. Crucially, it directs readers to an interactive map to check whether their property needs a selective licence.
Check an address, not just a neighbourhood name
A letting advert may describe a location differently from an official boundary. Begin with the full address and postcode, then use the council’s map and the relevant designation notice. If the result is unclear, ask the licensing team for confirmation rather than infer coverage from a nearby street or a familiar area name.
Keep a record of the check with the property file. Note the date, the address used and the document consulted. Where someone else carries out the check, ask them to explain the result and provide the supporting council information.
Read the designation behind the map
The council links separately to public notices for designations one and two and for designations three and four. Those documents provide context that a brief news article cannot replace. Read the notice relevant to the address, including its scope, dates and any stated exceptions.
An owner reviewing several homes should record the answer for each one. A licence or map result for one property does not settle the position for the rest of a portfolio, even when the homes are close together.
Make the follow-up practical
Once the applicable route is understood, gather the information requested by the council and agree who will submit it. Keep the application, acknowledgements, licence conditions and any later correspondence together. A shared task list can help an owner and agent avoid leaving the same request unanswered because each thought the other was handling it.
This overview is general information. It does not certify a property’s licensing position or reproduce every exception. Check the live council guidance before acting, particularly if the property’s occupation or management arrangements have changed.
