A grant can change the budget for an energy project, but it does not remove the need to investigate the work. Start with the home and the proposed improvement, then check the relevant scheme directly. A headline amount or a salesperson’s assurance should not be treated as confirmation that funding is available for the particular installation.

Identify the official scheme administrator and the current guidance. Record the eligibility conditions, application route and any requirements that must be met before work begins. Keep the version or date of the information so that a later change can be distinguished from what was checked initially.

For example, official Boiler Upgrade Scheme guidance describes support towards certain heating replacements in England and Wales and provides separate eligibility and application information. It is not a universal UK grant for every energy measure. Other locations and projects need their own research.

Ask the installer to explain the complete proposal. Establish what equipment, design work, alterations and making good are included, and what remains outside the price. Check professional credentials through the appropriate route rather than relying solely on a logo on a quotation.

Separate the gross project cost, any confirmed support and the amount you must pay. Ask when each payment is due and what happens if eligibility is not confirmed or the project changes. A grant should not be used to conceal a quotation that is difficult to understand.

Assess suitability independently of funding. A discounted installation can still be the wrong project if the building, planned use or associated works have not been properly considered. Obtain suitable advice about the whole home and compare complete alternatives where appropriate.

Finally, keep approvals, quotations, invoices and commissioning records together. Agree who handles any application and what evidence you will receive. This checklist does not establish eligibility or guarantee savings; it helps ensure that a support scheme strengthens a properly assessed project rather than becoming the only reason to proceed.
