Can a home battery help when solar panels are unsuitable? A personal account published by Tessa Shepperson on the Landlord Law Blog in July 2025 offers an example, but not a reliable savings forecast for another household.
Shepperson described installing three Fox batteries at an all-electric home after being advised that the roof was unsuitable for solar. She reported £918 lower costs over five months compared with the previous year, following an £8,000 installation. Those are the author's reported figures, not independently audited results or a controlled product test by Property Perpetuity.
The account also described difficulties understanding the controls and discovering that the particular installation could not export electricity as expected. That makes the operational questions at least as useful as the headline saving.
Start with your own electricity use
Energy Saving Trust explains that batteries can store surplus solar generation or charge when a suitable tariff offers cheaper electricity. The financial result depends on the installation and the way the household uses energy. Storage also involves energy losses, and the battery may need replacing before solar panels.
Before requesting quotations, gather bills and a picture of when electricity is used. Ask an installer to explain the proposed usable capacity, the assumptions behind the savings and the tariff used in the calculation. A comparison with last year's bill alone cannot isolate every effect, such as changed consumption or prices.
Check what the system actually does
The Centre for Sustainable Energy distinguishes storage capacity from the power a battery can deliver. A system that stores enough energy may still have limits on the appliances it can run together. Its guidance also warns that power-cut backup is not universal.
Ask for written confirmation of charging arrangements, export compatibility, backup capability and warranty conditions. For a rented home, also establish who pays for the installation, who benefits from lower bills and who will manage the controls. These are practical decisions, not evidence of an automatic increase in rent or property value.
Treat the archived experience as a prompt for questions. Obtain a property-specific assessment and compare complete quotations before deciding whether a battery is worthwhile.
